THR, TV Line and more, have caught up with The Originals Executive Producer, Julie Plec to discuss the aftermath of last night’s season finale, and what’s to come next season. Check out an excerpt from the interviews, and we’ll post more as they come in.
Via THR:
Congratulations on the first season. We have to start off by talking about the heartbreaking final moment between Klaus and Rebekah.
The first time I saw the cut, I just started crying and didn’t stop. That was the cut that was a hundred minutes long, so I was crying for other reasons — not necessarily good ones — but that was my first “Wow” emotional moment.
Was that a moment you wanted to build to?
Yeah. We knew from the beginning that we most likely losing Claire [Holt] about three-quarters of the way through the season, so when we were planning what would happen with the baby, it was very clear that that was the way [it should end]. It would be a beautiful resolution for both Rebekah’s character and Hope’s character, giving Rebekah in essence exactly what she said she wanted when she walked of the cemetery for the last time. She said she wanted to live and she wanted a family and the human experience, and now she gets to have it.

TVLINE | Now for that cliffhanger. Was that Finn or Kol with Esther?
You know, it’s supposed to be left a little bit up for questions, but the audience can easily make their own assumptions, given that he seemed very straight-laced and tamed and pious. So of the two brothers, if we were picking one, I know who I’d pick.
TVLINE | So now that both of Klaus’ parents are back, and they both want him dead, what’s next?
The biggest question is: At what point are they going to become aware of the other? And at what point is anyone going to become aware of them? That plays out over the first few episodes of Season 2, and it’s kind of fun because you’ve got these two really nasty entities from Klaus’ upbringing, both of whom are back in town. The shock when he realizes it’s not just one, but also the other, is going to be pretty great.

I was curious how you decided on Hope for the baby’s name. Did you have any other serious name considerations?
I’ll be 100 percent honest, we’ve been talking about it in the room. When you have a deadline, the best way to procrastinate is baby names, and I didn’t hear Hope as a pitch until I read it in the script. And it made me cry, and I thought, “Well, it’s either the cheesiest thing in the world or it’s the most beautiful thing in the world, and because I’m crying, it’s probably both, but I’m going to go for it.” So that was Diane Ademu-John, who wrote the script, that was a beautiful little surprise she peppered in there.
