Did the Season 8 #TVD Poster Hint at The Originals’ Big Bad?

So, this symbol is showing up all over the Quarter in NOLA – and areas beyond.

It is even showing up in Little Hope’s dreams. And her doodles . . .

Little Adam even saw it before the Angry Ball of Blue Light attacked him, or ate him, or whatever it did to him to make him scream like that.

Traditionally a dragon or a serpent eating its own tail. Called an ouroboros, it has a lot of significance in history. First seen in ancient Egypt, the symbol transitioned to the Greeks and the practice of alchemy (not just turning lead into gold, but also the creation of an elixir of immortality, and the idea that the human body and soul could be perfected through gnosis) and has long been thought to represent immortality, cyclicality, and the idea of something constantly re-creating itself.

Whether we realize it or not, we’ve seen this symbol in this “universe” (ie The Originals and The Vampire Diaries universe) before. (Our friends over at ScreenerTV posed the same question, and got us to thinking) Look closely at Elena’s coffin in the season 8 poster for The Vampire Diaries . . .

Although not the same, the Ouroboros on Elena’s coffin is in an infinity shape, but it is definitely a serpent coiling upon itself and eating its own tail.

Now, what does this mean? Maybe nothing. Maybe Julie Plec et al likes the symbol and it just represented the change/growth of the Salvatore brothers and what they went through in their gazillion years on earth. I don’t know.

But, I do know that Julie Plec et al LOVES to hide things in plain sight. I also know they like mis-direction – LOOK OVER HERE, WE’RE NOT DOING ANYTHING IN THIS CORNER, I SWEAR – so, it really just could be nothing.

It truly does make me wonder, though. What, exactly, are we dealing with here? What do you think?
